Welcome to my Summer 2008 Bike Tour page.  My route is an ambitious, 4,000-mile loop through the American West (see map).  The ride will take me across the desert southwest in southern Nevada and New Mexico and Colorado.  When I crest the Rockies in Southern Colorado, I will turn north and follow the Continental Divide all the way into Montana.  In Northern Montana I will pick up the old Lewis and Clark route to the Pacific in northern Oregon.  After that, it's down the coast and back home to Santa Cruz.  A piece of cake!!

I begin riding on Sunday, June 8 and plan to be back in Santa Cruz no later than Sunday, August 24.  That is a total of 78 (potential) riding days -- 11 weeks and a day. I will need to average about 50 miles a day (making no allowance for rest days).

I am riding an aluminum, hard-tail mountain bike, pulling a suspended BOB trailer (see pic).  I will camp most nights, with an occasional motel thrown into the mix. I will try to ride every day, but my schedule will accommodate a few rest days if I need them.

A big "thank you!" to my students at Kirby School, Joshua Tsuji and Max Burkhardt, for putting this site up.  Also, thanks to my good friend Bernadette Pedago for giving me a nice jump start to my ride -- driving me out of the metropolitan area.

This tour is dedicated to the memory of my brother, Patrick, who left us on June 6, 2008.
